Krishna's Cows is our cow protection project in collaboration with Ahimsa Dairy Foundation in Rutland.

Many wonder why the Vedic and Vaishnava cultures especially stress protection of the cow. The philosophical reason is simple: The cow is considered one of our mothers, as she gives us her milk and thus nutures our health and well being. Just as no civilized person would injure or kill their mother, the Vedas teach that to take milk from the cow and then kill her is the same as killing one’s mother. Similarly, the bull is considered like the father because the bull traditionally helps in the tilling of the fields, and thus is to be respected.

In ISKCON farms no cow, bull or calf is slaughtered. We look at innovative ways to work with the bull and engage their God-given strength in the service of others, under humane and loving conditions. Regardless of milk production, cows and bulls also produce dung and urine which is valuable as fertilizer, compost, some medicines, cleaning products and biogas fuel. In ISKCON farms they are sheltered in barns (goshala), wherein they are fed with healthy staple and are taken care of.

We believe protecting cows is a most important component of protecting the earth. According to the ancient Vedic texts the cow is the representative of Mother Earth. And, when the cow and the bull are mistreated, Mother Earth withdraws her bounty.

ABOUT AHIMSA DAIRY FOUNDATION

The Ahimsa Dairy Foundation is a not-for-profit company that was set up to provide entirely slaughter-free milk. Until recently, we piloted our model and worked in partnership with an organic dairy and environmental charity in Kent called Commonwork, and with OMSco – the Organic Milk Suppliers Co-operative. We are now completely independent and have our own organic land in Rutland.

The inspiration behind the Ahimsa Dairy Foundation comes from the farm at Bhaktivedanta Manor, which is run by the Hare Krishna community and remains a unique experiment into what happens when dairy cows and their offspring are allowed to live productive lives instead of being exploited and sacrificed in the name of cheap milk.

No parent would like to see their children suffer. So why should we let cows and their calves suffer to feed our children industrialised milk, when there is a much better, healthier and more compassionate alternative?

At present our girls, who all have names, produce 23,000 of litres of milk a year. We distribute to the door in North West London and parts of Hertfordshire.

Cows are retired to join their friends in the non-milking herd when they are past milking age where they spend their days eating grass and chewing the cud.

We are looking at a variety of ways of working with bulls. These range from ploughing the land to producing electricity and milling flour.

Our mission is to make slaughter-free milk a reality and establish sustainable dairy farms across Britain, which give people a real ethical choice.

AHIMSA DAIRY EXPANSION CAMPAIGN

An opportunity has arisen to purchase 120 acres of land to expand the Ahimsa Dairy, so that they can get more cows and produce more slaughter-free milk. The land will be purchased by ISKCON-London and rented to Ahimsa Dairy Foundation to be able to provide milk for the worship of our Deities.

Hare Krishna Food for Life is the world's largest vegetarian food distribution program serving millions of meals daily, with projects in over 60 countries. With roots in the Vaishnava culture of charity and the distribution of pure food to all, the project is a modern day revival of the ancient culture of hospitality and a belief in the equality of all beings. Food for Life has been lauded by The New York Times and government relief agencies worldwide for its efforts worldwide.

Food for Life in London is an initiative from London's Radha-Krishna Temple, that has been feeding hot vegetarian meals to the homeless in Central London since 1994. We are an affiliate of the Food for Life Global charity.

Srila Prabhupada, ISKCON's Founder-Acarya, is the inspiration behind the project. He stated that “No one within ten miles of a Hare Krishna Temple should go hungry.”

We provide 1,200 freshly cooked, hot vegetarian meals a day, six days a week. Often this is the only meal a person in need will eat all day. It is run solely by volunteers who donate their time after work.
