ISKCON-London Counsellor S Y S T E M The Purpose: • Educate and train devotees to live according to the Krishna conscious principles of their asrama. • Provide systematic training to devotees in matters of philosophy, sadhana, Vaisnava behaviour, etiquette, lifestyle and attitudes. • Provide a formal framework within which personal care and attention can be extended to all devotees so as to make them feel loved, wanted and part of a wonderful spiritual family. • Foster warm personal relationships and a spirit of love and trust amongst devotees based on Krishna Conscious principles. • Provide a forum through which allocation of service, organization of major events, communication of important decisions, etc., can be facilitated. Responsibility of Counsellors: • A Counsellor is a friend and guide in Krishna Consciousness. The Counsellor is like a spiritual elder brother or sister and must take personal care of all devotees in the group. • A Counsellor should inspire and encourage their counsellees in Krishna Consciousness and monitor their progress. • A Counsellor is expected to provide Krishna Conscious training to their counsellees. • A Counsellor is required to counsel their counsellees not only in spiritual matters but also in other personal or domestic matters where necessary. In other words, he or she has to look into the overall welfare of the counsellees or try to connect the Counsellee with professional help if required. • A Counsellor conducts fortnightly meetings with their counsellees. • A Counsellor recommends the names of qualified candidates for first and second initiation. • A Counsellor is expected to provide useful inputs to the Board of Counsellors and to actively participate in its meetings. • As a leader, a Counsellor is expected to set a good standard of sadhana, service and behaviour. What Happens at Counsellee Meetings? • Vaisnava bhajans • A few pages of one of Srila Prabhupada’s books are discussed. One of the Counsellees makes a presentation of the same and a discussion follows. • Sharing of realizations. • Discussion on service, sadhana and Vaisnava etiquette. • Devotees are asked if they want to discuss any problems which are not personal (personal problems are discussed in private with the counsellor). • Kirtana. • Prasadam. How Can I Join the Counsellor System? • Attend the ‘Essence of Bhagavad-Gita’ course. • Provide a character reference from your Temple department head or a Temple authority. • Chant 16 rounds every day. • Follow the four regulative principles.
